For my "Cardinals in Winter" sample, I used watercolor paper.  I painted my bg and the cardinal image, using re-inkers, water and a fan brush.

Did you know that Faith hand draws each stamp image at MFP? I am sure glad I can stamp, because I can't draw at all!!
